Constitution Day: Mary McCord
Galloway, N.J. — Mary McCord, renowned constitutional expert and media commentator, will be the keynote speaker for 91ֱ’s 19th annual Constitution Day program at 6 p.m., Monday, Sept. 29, in the Campus Center Event Room.
The event is free and open to the public. Her keynote address is titled “Executive Overreach and the Erosion of the Rule of Law.”
McCord is the Executive Director of the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection and Visiting Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center, where she leads a team that brings constitutional impact litigation at all levels of government. The cases cover a wide range of areas from First Amendment rights, immigration, criminal justice reform, combatting political violence and protecting democratic processes.
McCord has written about domestic terrorism, unlawful militia activity, public safety and the rule of law for publications including the Washington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times and The Atlantic.
She has appeared on NPR, PBS, MSNBC, CNN, ABC and other media outlets. She is an MSNBC and NBC legal and national security contributor, and co-host of the award-winning MSNBC podcast, “Prosecuting Donald Trump,” now renamed “Main Justice.”
On Sept. 17, 1787, the delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia signed the United States Constitution. 91ֱ began celebrating this important occasion in 2006 as a result of a new federal law designating Sept. 17 as Constitution Day. The law requires public schools, universities and governmental entities to offer educational programs to promote a better understanding of our Constitution.
